Image captures Iran military base explosion damage

A satellite image has captured apparently extensive damage from an explosion at a military base near Tehran earlier this month.

Some buildings at the Revolutionary Guards base seem to have been completely destroyed in the explosion.

The 12 November blast killed 17 soldiers and has been widely blamed in Iran on foreign intelligence services.

On Monday, another in a series of unexplained explosions was reported in central Isfahan province.

They come at a time of heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

US and European powers fear that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon, though Iran says its nuclear programme is purely for peaceful purposes.

There has also been speculation in Israel’s media that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering ordering strikes against Iran’s nuclear sites, in the hope of stalling or ending its programme.

‘Missile work’The 12 November blast, which occurred about 40 km (25 miles) away from Tehran, was described at the time by the Revolutionary Guards as an accident, while one local member of parliament said an ammunition depot had exploded.

An elite military force, the Revolutionary Guard was set up shortly after the 1979 Iranian revolution to defend the country’s Islamic system.

It has been targeted by UN sanctions aimed at pressuring Iran to halt uranium enrichment.

The images of damage at the site were released by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security.

It reported that when the explosion had happened, Iran was «apparently performing a volatile procedure involving a missile engine».

One of those killed was Gen Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, who was said to have been working on Iran’s missile programme.

Some damage seen in the image may have been caused by subsequent controlled demolition of buildings and removal of debris, the institute said.

On Monday, people in Isfahan told the BBC they had heard an explosion from the south-west – some distance from the province’s declared nuclear facilities in the east.

Iranian media reports quoted the deputy governor-general of Isfahan province as confirming, then denying, that there had been an explosion.

Report: Mysterious blast in Iran’s Isfahan damaged key nuclear site

London Times quotes Israel intelligence officials as saying that satellite images show this week’s reported blast in Isfahan was ‘no accident.’

mysterious blast which reportedly rocked Isfahan in western Iran on Monday damaged a key nuclear facility in the city, the Times of London reported on Wednesday.

On Monday, Haaretz sited Iranian media as reporting that an explosion was heard near Isfahan, home to a uranium conversion plant operational since 2004.

According to reports by the semi-official Fars news agency, frightened residents called the fire department after the blast, forcing the city authorities to admit there had been an explosion. Residents reported that their windows shook from the explosion’s force.

At first, Iranian officials denied the reports, with the governor of Isfahan later alleging that the blast was caused by an accident that had occurred during a nearby military drill.

The report quotes Israeli intelligence officials who based their conclusion on updated satellite images showing smoke billowing from the direction of the conversion plant. However, a report in the Times on Wednesday alleged that the blast had not been a military accident, and that the city’s nuclear facility was damaged.

According to the Israeli sources, there was «no doubt» that the blast had damaged the nuclear facility, and that the explosion was not an «accident.»

Original report of blast in Iranian city of Isfahan as appeared on Fars website, Nov. 28, 2011.

It must be noted that the Times report was not confirmed by any other source.«This caused damage to the facilities in Isfahan, particularly to the elements we believe were involved in storage of raw materials,» one source told the Sunday Times.

The Isfahan plant went into operation in 2004, taking uranium from mines and producing uranium fluoride gas, which then feeds the centrifuges that enrich the uranium.

Since 2004, thousands of kilograms of uranium flouride gas were stockpiled at Isfahan and subsequently sent to the enrichment plant in Natanz.

Commenting on the report of an explosion in Isfahan, U.S. State Department Spokesman Mark Toner said Monday, «We don’t have any information at this time other than what we’ve seen in the press as well. But certainly we’re looking into it.»

«As you know, we’re somewhat limited in our ability to glean information on the ground there, but we’re certainly looking into it,» Toner added.

Former Mossad chief Meir Dagan said in a television interview on Tuesday that if Israel attacks Iran, it will be dragged into a regional war.

According to Dagan, Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas will respond with massive rocket attacks on Israel. In that scenario, Syria may join in the fray, Dagan said on the television program “Uvda”.

Τι λένε και οι Ρώσοι;

Sabotage? Sat-pic shows Iran missile base devastation

29 November, 2011

A satellite image of the destroyed military compound in Bid Ganeh, Iran (DigitalGlobe)

Two weeks after a powerful explosion at a military installation near Tehran claiming the lives of 17 people, a Washington-based think tank has released satellite images showing extensive damage to the site, likely to have been caused by the blast.

The Institute for Science and International Security, (ISIS) a research group, which specializes in studies of nuclear weapons and related technology, has posted two commercial satellite images of the Iranian military compound on its website.

One was taken approximately two months before the November 12th explosion. The other was taken 10 days after the blast and shows that some of the buildings appear to have been destroyed and some debris could be seen strewn about on the ground.

Paul Brannan, a Senior Research analyst for the ISIS however suggests that some of the destruction seen in the image may have also resulted “from subsequent controlled demolition of buildings and removal of debris.” But he concludes that most of the damage seen in the later image “likely resulted from the explosion.” He explains it by a lack of “heavy equipment such as cranes or dump trucks on the site, and a considerable amount of debris still present.”

“About the same number of trucks are visible in the image after the blast as in an image from approximately two months prior to the blast,” he claims.

Brannan also states that “ISIS learned that the blast occurred as Iran had achieved a major milestone in the development of a new missile. Iran was apparently performing a volatile procedure involving a missile engine at the site when the blast occurred.” Brannan quotes no sources for this information on the website, but The Washington Post later said the senior research analyst had obtained it from the “knowledgeable officials”.

Iranian officials maintain the blast was the result of an accidental explosion at an ammunition depot. However some reports suggested that the blast, which killed Brigade General Hassan Moghaddam and 16 others, may have been an act of sabotage.

Did Mossad kill Iran’s missile research?

A key figure in Iran’s missile program has been killed in an explosion at a Revolutionary Guard base in the country. Some reports suggest that the blast which killed Brigade General Hassan Moghaddam and 16 others may have been an act of sabotage.
